Activity Absences
Each student is allowed 10 activity absences for all the school activities a student is involved in. Activity absences are absences from any part of a school day while the student is involved in a school activity. Band members should reserve approximately three activity absences for competitions. Honor groups and the state solo and ensemble competition, for which you had to qualify, do not count towards the 10 activity absences.
Eligibility
Eisenhower High School and the State Activities Association rules state that students who are failing any class for two weeks in a row will not be able to participate in any competition or an activity that would cause the student to miss class time during that week.
In addition to having passing grades, if a student has more than 5 absences, from any class, they are ineligible to compete or miss school for an extra-curricular activity for the remainder of the first nine weeks of the semester. Students who have 10 absences are ineligible to compete or miss class for extra curricular activities for the reminder of the semester. The absences that do not count towards this total are activity absences and absences that are waived by presentation of a doctor’s note to the attendance secretary.
Students must be in school the entire day to participate in an extra curricular activity that evening unless they present the office with a doctor’s note.
Required Equipment
Students who desire to participate in band must supply the following:
Brass- An instrument with a mouthpiece, instrument care supplies such as valve oil and slide grease, a pencil, white gloves, white band
shoes, white band socks, a band shirt and a pair of khaki pants.
Woodwinds - An instrument with a mouthpiece, a minimum of three high quality reeds, instrument care supplies such as cork grease, a cleaning cloth, a swab or other pad care items, a pencil, white gloves, white band shoes and white socks, a band shirt and a pair of khaki pants.
Percussion - wooden snare sticks with wooden tips (see Mr. Haas for recommended models), pencil, white band shoes and white socks, a band shirt and a pair of khaki pants.
School Instruments
The school does provide the larger and more expensive instruments for students to use. These instruments are checked out at the beginning of school and once they are checked out to a student, they are the students responsibility. Any damage to the instrument besides normal wear and tear, is the students financial responsibility. The school reserves the right to take back the instrument if we determine that the instrument is being damaged or the student is not fulfilling their obligations to their performing group such as missing rehearsals or performances or other discipline problems.
Instrument storage
Instrument storage areas are available at the high school and the junior high for the convenient storage of the students instruments. during the school day only. The school does not take responsibility for the security of these storage areas. The student must supply a way to lock their instrument. A small chain with a padlock would be sufficient to protect their instrument if the case does not have a lock. Locks can be installed by a music repair man. Students should not store their instruments in their school lockers at any time.
Band Uniform
The band uniform is a symbol of the Eisenhower High School Band, Eisenhower High School and Lawton Public Schools. At all times it should be worn properly with pride and respect for all that it represents.
The uniform consists of the school supplied jacket, protective collar, front plate, pants and a hat with a plume and hat box. Also
checked out from the school will be a uniform carrying bag and a hangar specifically designed for the uniform.
The student will need to supply white gloves (available for purchase from the band) white full length socks and white band shoes. These shoes are available at music stores and some shoe stores. Tennis shoes of any style are not acceptable. The band has about 40 pair of shoes of various sizes, that may be checked out on a first come first served basis.
Ear rings are not to be worn at marching competitions and only small ear rings may be worn at other marching performances or at concert performances. Hair that is over the collar must be placed securely under the marching hat during marching performances.
All band members are required to purchase a casual uniform that consists of a polo-style shirt and a pair of long khaki pants. The student will be allowed to wear any comfortable shoe with the casual uniform. This uniform is worn at pep rallies, most away football games, home basketball games and other informal performances as well as performances where the heat would make wearing the formal uniform uncomfortable.
Students are welcome to earn the money for these items by working in the bandroom after school.
The flag uniform consists of the school supplied top. Team members must supply the pants as well as shoes and socks.
The uniform should always be hung up properly on the supplied uniform hangar with the pant creases lined up and placed in the uniform bag. If the uniform is damp from perspiration or precipitation, it must be hung on the uniform hangar and allowed to dry before it is placed in the uniform bag. Failure to do so could cause the uniform to mildew. It is the students responsibility to make sure the uniform is not wrinkly by hanging it up properly. The uniform jacket contains a removable collar liner that may be removed and washed by hand, dried and returned to the jacket.
The uniform may be stored at the school or at home, but the uniform is the students responsibility no matter where it is stored and students will be financially responsible for damaged or missing parts.
